Curtain Designs & Colours

Choosing the right design and colour for your curtains is crucial in achieving a cohesive look. Whether you’re looking for bold prints, classic stripes, or elegant solids, Winston Interiors has you covered. Consider the room’s purpose, existing décor, and the amount of natural light when selecting your curtains. For instance, vibrant and airy fabrics are ideal for living areas, while bedrooms may benefit from darker, heavier materials for added privacy and light control.

How to Measure for Curtains

Accurate measurement is crucial for the perfect curtain fit. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1.) Measure Width: Use a metal tape measure for accuracy and measure the width of your curtain pole or track. If you don’t have one installed yet, measure the width of the window and add approximately 20-30cm on each side. This extension allows your curtains to open fully, ensuring your window is not obscured when the curtains are drawn.

2.) Decide on Drop: The ‘drop’ is the length of your curtains. You have three main options:

  • Sill Length: End 1.25cm above the windowsill.
  • Below Sill: Extend 15cm below the sill.
  • Floor Length: Either just touching the floor or ending 1-2cm above it to prevent dragging.

3.) Special Considerations:

  • For radiators under windows, aim for just above the radiator to allow heat circulation.
  • For bay windows, measure each section separately and consider individual curtains for each pane or a specially designed track.

How to Fit a Curtain Pole

Fitting a curtain pole is simpler than it seems. Follow these steps for a secure installation:

1.) Positioning: The pole should be positioned about 15cm above the window frame and extend 15-20cm beyond each side of the frame. This positioning allows the curtains to cover the window entirely when open, maximizing light and giving the illusion of a larger window.

2.) Marking: Use a pencil to mark where the brackets will go. Ensure they are level using a spirit level.

3.) Drilling: Drill holes at the marked points, insert wall plugs, and then screw the brackets into place.

4.) Securing the Pole: Place the pole on the brackets and secure it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Some poles come with a central bracket for extra support, which is recommended for wider windows.

FAQ

How to Wash Curtains

The washing method depends on the fabric type:

  • Vacuuming: Use an upholstery attachment to gently remove dust from most curtains.
  • Machine Wash: Light fabrics like cotton can often be machine washed on a gentle cycle with mild detergent.
  • Hand Wash: Delicate fabrics may require hand washing in lukewarm water with mild soap.
  • Dry Clean: Heavier, ornate, or lined curtains might need to be professionally dry cleaned.

Should Curtains Touch the Floor?

  • Traditional Elegance: For a classic look, allow curtains to “puddle” slightly on the floor, adding 2-3 inches to the length for this effect.
  • Modern Practicality: For a contemporary and practical approach, curtains should just touch the floor or sit half an inch above it to prevent wear and tear.
  • Variations: In kitchens or bathrooms, shorter curtains that fall just below the sill are often more practical and hygienic.

Are Made to Measure Curtains Expensive?

While made to measure curtains are generally more costly than ready-made options, they provide value through perfect fit, personalisation, and quality. For example, opting for a simple fabric and design can be more cost-effective, while still benefiting from the tailored experience.

How to Hang Curtains

Ensure your pole or track is firmly installed and can bear the weight of the curtains. If using hooks, insert them into the tape at the top of your curtains and hang them onto the rings or gliders on your pole or track. For eyelet curtains, thread the pole through the eyelets.

Arrange the curtains in even, soft folds to achieve a professional look. This might involve pulling the cords on pencil pleat curtains to gather the fabric and tying them off securely.
